Absorption – Empathy

Installation
Two slide projectors
162 slide images

Translucent surfaces are arranged in the space; the projectors' beams of light scatter as they reach the surface. The space fills with the clatter of the machines and the felt warmth of their operation. The viewer steps into the streams of light, catching a bite of the visible.

What are objects, in a photograph, that reflect no light at all? The series show black, light-absorbing objects. These objects have become filled with the light that surrounded them, having drawn the visible into themselves. Yet no light particles have been reflected from the object back to the camera, they never meet the film. The object becomes, for the human eye, the antithesis of the photograph, non-existent.

Absorption – Empathy is an interactive installation consisting of two slide projectors and 162 slide images. The images can be changed by viewers, so that a continually shifting diptych appears on the projection surface placed between them.

The installation has been shown installed in gallery space, and site-specifically.
