Aether

Jesper Dolgov & Jussi Ronkainen
B-galleria
28.7.–14.8.2022

Aether brings together works independently produced by two artists, which nonetheless enter into a shared space and concrete interaction with each other. Dolgov's works produce light in the space, while Ronkainen's works react to its continuous changes. Through this dialogue, a new kind of shifting arrangement emerges in the space, one that reflects on the nature of the photograph.

The viewer leaves traces in the space. As the door opens, a light-measuring apparatus registers changes in the light. The viewer moves through the slide projector's beam, casting shadows. The beam of light grazes a trouser leg; light scatters. As the viewer clicks through the sequence of slide images, Ronkainen's light-gathering Black Box responds. Inside the Black Box lies an exposure lasting the duration of the exhibition.

What kinds of touches does the photographic process contain? The body of work gives rise to a collective photograph, whose coming-into-being is shaped by time, the cycle of day and night, bouncing light, the absorptive capacity of materials, "chance."
